My answer to the #1 question students are asking this spring

The most frequent question students are asking right now is: “Will my college or university be open for the fall semester?”

While most colleges and universities in the U.S. are hedging their bets right now, some are stating that they plan to reopen and have on-campus classes this fall. The Chronicle of Higher Education is keeping a list going so you can check and see if your university is on it. If not, bookmark the page and keep checking:

I haven’t found such a resource for European and other countries’ institutions, but I will keep you posted. In the meantime, you will have to rely on individual universities’ websites.

So, how will you get there if your university is, in fact, open this fall?

I suggest you keep an eye on information published by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) in the US, the NHS in the UK and other country-specific health authorities. I have heard that international students may have to get a medical clearance before departure but it’s a bit early to speculate on the measures. Getting your visa with many consulates and embassies closed will be the first challenge. I suggest getting started now by assembling all the documentation you will need so you will be ready to submit your visa application when it’s possible.
